Sanskrit Visarga Sandhi

When Do Visarga Sandhi Rules Apply?

First Word ending in ः (visarga)
+
Second Word starting with any letter

"राम:" ends with visarga → Apply visarga sandhi rules

Steps

Step 1: Look at the first letter of the second word
Step 2: Check if it's a SKiP letter
  • SKiP letters are:
        S K P
      स श ष क ख प फ
sa śa ṣa ka kha pa pha
  • If YES → Skip! No change - keep visarga as is
  • If NO → Continue to Step 3
Step 3: Check if it's a TouCH letter
  • TouCH letters are:
           T ou CH
        त थ ट ठ च छ
ta tha ṭa ṭha ca cha
  • If YES → Join the words and replace visarga with the matching sibilant:
    • For त थ → use sa (स)
    • For ट ठ → use ṣa (ष)
    • For च छ → use śa (श)
  • If NO → Continue to Step 4
Step 4: If the vowel before visarga is 'a' (अ), follow the steps below. If NO → Continue to Step 5.
  • If second word starts with 'a' → Change to 'o' + avagraha
    Teacher explaining a + a vowel transformation
  • If second word starts with any consonant → Change to 'o'
Teacher explaining vowel transformation to student
  • If second word starts with any vowel (except 'a') → Drop the visarga
Step 5: If the vowel before visarga is 'ā' (आ), drop the visarga. If NO → Continue to Step 6.
  • Drop the visarga
Support staff explaining long ā vowel rules
Step 6: If the vowel is an "ic" vowel (इच् - i, ī, u, ū, e, ai, o, au)
  • Apply "redness" transformation
  • Exception: If second word starts with 'r', just drop the visarga
    Illustration for ic vowel exception
Special Exception: For pronouns सः (saḥ) and एषः (eṣaḥ)
  • When सः or एषः is followed by a consonant, simply drop the visarga
    Example: एषः + नरः → एष नरः (this man)
  • When followed by a vowel, follow the regular rules for visarga sandhi
Special Exception: For पुनः (punaḥ)
  • Since the root form is actually पुनर् (punar), when followed by a vowel, it becomes पुनर् again
  • When followed by consonants, follow the regular rules for visarga sandhi
